What is WayKen advantage?What we’re really good at is CNC machining(Including Plastic Machining,Clear Parts,Aluminum Parts),and Vacuum Casting for Low-Volume Production,and Finishing & Painting. It dawned on us one day that we could just as well apply our expertise not only to mold making but to machining plastic parts directly. After all, not everybody needs so many parts that injection molding is justified. Not only that, but 80% of customers make some sort of prototype part before going to injection molding anyway.

Do you provide any other Prototyping services?Yes, we also provide following services:
SLA (Stereolithography)
SLS (Selective Laser Sintering)
RIM (Reaction Injection Molding)
Injection Moulding for Short run production, known as Bridge tooling.

How does WayKen compare to Western suppliers on price?This is a complex question. China’s greatest advantage is its labor cost.ShenZhen City workers’ pay is, on average, one-fifth compared with the USA. Imported technology, however, can cost as much as double the USA/Europe. Electricity in China is on par with some of the highest prices in the US and Europe, and imported materials can be much higher, but domestically produced much lower.
As a general rule, labor-rich work is considerably more competitive than technology and material-rich work. But this is not always true. Price can vary greatly depending on the type of prototyping service. Some general guidelines to consider include:

  • SLA & SLS prototyping are not competitive from China unless you start to do full cosmetic finishing to the raw SLA/SLS model. Then, production can be about substantially less than Western prices.
  • CNC Machining have a great advantage in price,It is normally 30-40% less than Western prices.
  • Vacuum casting of polyurethane is normally 40-50% less than Western prices. The expensive material here is the imported HeiCast or Axson resin. That said, vacuum casting and the subsequent finishing are very labor intensive.
  • Rapid tooling for plastics is consistently nearly half the US/European price.

How do I get a quote?We need a 3D CAD solid model to prepare a quote. All of the WayKen processes are dependent on good 3D CAD solid models. Two-dimensional (2D) drawings are not adequate for quoting or making parts.

Can we purchase using a Purchase Order (PO)?Yes. We frequently deal with Purchase Orders. When ordering parts, please discuss terms and payment options with your Project Engineer.

How can I pay WayKen? Bank to bank wire transfer. WayKen has accounts in Hong Kong and ShenZhen, China.

Will WayKen sign Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDA)?Yes. WayKen always keeps customer information confidential and only releases information at the customer’s discretion. If it gives you peace-of-mind to sign an NDA we are more than willing to do so.

How can I get extensive help with my project?WayKen has knowledgeable project engineers who can assist you with all your project questions and needs. They can help you through the entire prototyping to production process and make expert recommendations.

Who is responsible for my project?Each project is assigned a senior level sales engineer and a lead program manager, who will be there from project launch to the delivery of your parts.

Do you ship Internationally? Absolutely, we are serving worldwide clients. We use FedEx, UPS and DHL for overseas shipments depends upon your preference.

Can my company get credit with WayKen?Except in very exceptional circumstances, all new rapid prototyping customers must pay in advance for the first three orders, after which we will consider giving 30 days credit. Except in very special cases, all tooling orders require a 50% deposit in advance, even for clients who have credit terms. Typically the balance must be paid after T1 approval of samples. Terms are negotiable with each individual customer.

What is preferred 3D Cad file format?We can accept native SolidWorks (.sldprt) or ProE (.prt) files as well as solid 3D CAD models from other CAD systems output in IGES (.igs), STEP (.stp), or Parasolid (.x_t) format. We can also accept .stl files.

Can you use STL file for machining? Sorry, we cannot use STL file for machining. We can use STL file for viewing or quotation purpose but need 3d CAD file in Parasolid or STEP or IGES format for machining.

I don’t have a 3D CAD model. Can WayKen create one for me?
Sorry, we don’t offer any design services, but we can provide contact information for companies that do. Please contact us via email and we’ll link you up with a designer that is familiar with our process.

Do you work in Millimeters or Inches?MM (Millimeters).

What is CNC machining? CNC, stands for Computer Numerical Control, applies to machine control system but erroneously used as a replacement term for NC. CNC is a generic term for vast field of numerical controllers. Our application is related to CNC Milling; used for machining complex parts and shapes hard to machine with conventional machines. Firstly cutter path is generated direct from the CAD model, which is transferred to machine controller in the form of numerical data. This data is used to move the machine table and tool to create the high precision jobs.

What are the Advantages of CNC machining?

  • No need to compromise with raw material because parts can be machined directly out of engineering plastics, ferrous or non ferrous metals.
  • Suitable for accurate and highly finished parts.
  • Economical for small to short run of production parts that require wide range of operations to be performed.
  • Generally large and bulky parts are economical by cnc machining compared to Rapid Prototyping processes because most of RP proprietary materials are expensive.

What are the Disadvantages of CNC machining?

  • Need to spend considerable time for programming before actual machining.
  • Sometime sharp corners are difficult to machined due to cutter radius which need to be sharpened by secondary operation.
  • Undercuts are difficult to machine so sometimes parts need to be made in sections and glued to accommodate undercut features.
  • Deep and narrow pockets/slots could be difficult to machine due to cutter size constrains.

CNC Machined vs. “Rapid Prototype” Parts?CNC machined parts are far superior to RP parts in accuracy, strength, surface finish and material availability. CNC machined plastic parts are an excellent representation of a molded part. If it wasn’t for the absence of ejector pin marks, you can hardly tell them apart. On the other hand, RP parts can be created in any geometry imaginable, including geometries that can’t be manufactured by any other process. So there are tradeoffs.

What materials are available? WayKen stocks a variety of plastic resins (including glass filled) as well as aluminum that are available in the sheet stock we use in our process. While WayKen’s material choices are much broader than those available with rapid prototyping, they are nevertheless more limited than in injection molding. Most materials are available in only one or two grades and in one or two colors — typically Black and Natural or White. Some materials are only available in certain thicknesses. Your quote will allow you to evaluate the cost of different material choices.

What is your most common plastic material used for general purpose components? ABS, (Acrylonitrite Butadine Styrene) is general purpose rigid Thermoplastic with a combination of properties that make it ideal for the widest range of applications.

What is suitable material for clear transparent lens like parts?

  • Acrylic, also known as PMMA (PolyMethyl-MetaAcrylate) is an amorphous thermoplastic material with very good optical clarity.
  • PC (PolyCarbonate) can also be used for clear parts but clarity is bit lower than Acrylic. If you need combination of clarity and strength then Polycarbonate could be better choice.

What type of finishing available? By default parts are supplied with smooth finish i.e. outer visible faces lightly sanded to remove all machining marks but inner non visual faces are left as machined finish.
Following type of finishes available:

  • Standard finish: Also comes under category of Smooth finish, suitable for visual presentation
  • Polish finish: Good for clear parts and master models
  • Primered Finish: Parts are grey primered making them ready for painting
  • Painted Finish: We can match to your pantone PMS colour code in Matt, Satin or Gloss finish.
  • Metallic Finish: Can paint in metallic finish in most common colours.
  • Tinting: We can tint on Clear or translucent parts
  • Chrome Plating: Yes we can Chrome plate on ABS plastic parts, works good for tap ware and other metallic look parts
  • Anodising Finish: We can anodise Aluminium parts in most common colours.
  • Bead Blast: We generally use Bead Blast (Sand Blast) finish on metallic or translucent parts.
